Consider how these images make use of the visual design strategies emphasized in the second rough draft. Click images to enlarge.

Example REACH Board

This board illustrates the use of a pattern in the background, variety of shapes and size, and an effective border that connects thematically to the board's topic. The student included two very common artifacts, a flag and a country map, but did a wonderful job unifying them with the overall look of the board.

Example REACH Board

Impressively, the image of the horse is drawn directly on the background. The image of the family crest gives the board a strong focal point. Several of the artifacts use drop-shadows to create depth.

Example REACH Board

A very successful use of 3-D elements and variety of materials to enhance the board. This board is great example of using design elements that connect thematically to the topic (in this case, the Vietnam War).

Example REACH Board

The strong use of contrasting colors makes it easy to read this board's title. The layout of artifacts demonstrates strong balance. Family trees are very common artifacts on REACH boards, but notice this student's original twist by connecting the family tree to the map. Lastly, notice how she fills available space while still allowing resting points for the eye.

Example REACH Board

Another great example of using a variety of shapes and sizes, while still maintaining an overall unity. This board is clearly the result of a student who took her time to work neatly!

Example REACH Board

A REACH board from several years ago, this board continues to impress me for how effectively it maintains unity while including variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Those are pencils being used as a border! The background patterns connect thematically to the topic, while not over-powering the artifacts.

Example REACH Board

Using newspaper to create a pattern for the background illustrated great originality and connected well with the student's topic. The road down the center gave the layout a strong focal point that leads the viewer's eyes into the board. The title has strong contrast with the background, making it easy to read.

Example REACH Board

This is a great example of a board demonstrating all around neatness. Notice how carefully this student has matted the artifacts to create a nice border around each. It's hard to overlook his use of texture in the background and pattern in the border running around the entire board.

Example REACH Board

This student created a very dynamic layout by overlapping many of the artifacts. Also, tilting the artifacts helps give the board variety, while also creating diagonal lines to move the viewer's eyes around the board. Lastly, the background design gives the board texture.

Example REACH Board

This board is a great example of unity. A similar font style is used on all headings and the consistent use black borders ties the entire board together. Within this unity, there is still variety of sizes of artifacts. It is also very apparent this student took her time to work neatly.

Example REACH Board

This student developed a new technique by printing the topic overview on a transparency to allow the textures of the background to show through. The warms of the left panel contrast the cool tones of the center section, yet the tissue textures of the background help unify the design.

Example REACH Board

This stunning board shows much attention to detail. The artifacts and captions are double-matted and reflect the color scheme of the top and bottom borders. Using a map as a background design creates visual interest, yet it is subdued enough not to overwhelm the foreground elements. Lastly, the artifacts illustrate variety of shapes and sizes.

Example REACH Board

This board illustrates that you can have fun with your project and still do a great job with the design and presentation of information. The use of the camp fire as a design focal point highlights a particular aspect of the topic, it emphasizes that the topic is about a family sharing a tradition. Meanwhile, the student has divided the board into three sections, one for each generation to inform the viewer about the tradition being passed down through generations.

Thank you to these students for allowing their boards to be displayed!
