Team 1 - Ancient Chinese Geography

Political Map of Ancient China

The purpose of this map is to show early sites of civilization. The land should be all one color so that the labeling is easier to read.

Include the following in your map:

*Anyang, *Luoyang, *Xi'an , *Bejiing, *Changsha, *Guangzhou.

Also include the major rivers and bodies of water, lands bordering China, and locations of famous sites. Scroll to the instructions for Team 3 (Dynasty Timeline) to choose several dynasties and add their borders.

Famous Site Visits

You must research the following sites important to the development of China and write a description of each site using original language (don't just copy words down)

Include a picture (either original or downloaded) of each site.

Terrain Map of Ancient China

The purpose of this map is to show geographical features and the shape of the land. Use terrain maps of China to help you with color choice etc.

Please color, identify, and label major rivers, bodies of water, and highland systems. Identify the four main geographical regions of China: *the subarctic regions in the north, *the fertile plains in the east, *the desert in the west and *the tropical lowlands in the south as well as label specific examples of plains and deserts.

Team 2 - Ancient Chinese Philosophies

Real Life Problems - How would each behave?

You must research each of the four main Chinese philosophies from the Hundred Schools of Thought in the Zhou Dynasty: Moism, Daoism, Legalism, and Confucianism. Also, you should research the introduction of Buddhism into China.

Using this research you are to prepare a response to two situations. Make a separate chart for each situation below describing how a follower from each philosophy would view or handle the problem.

Problem #1 - A student knows that they are failing a class. They know they will be in trouble when their parents find out. How do they handle the situation?

Problem #2 - A student's friend starts to smoke and is trying to influence the student to start also. How do they handle this situation?

Be creative in creating each chart and in the way that you display the question.

Philosophy Posters

Using the links provided, look at examples of posters done by other 6th grade students. Click on them to read the explanation of why they created the posters the way that they did.

Create three original posters portraying Daoism, Moism, Confucianism/Legalism, or Buddhism

Include written explanations for each explaining why you chose to portray these beliefs the way you did and a brief summary of that school of thought.

Team 3 - Ancient Chinese Leaders

Dynasty Timeline

Create a timeline with the Dynasties listed below. You must also include 2 - 3 facts about the achievements and/or characteristics of each dynasty on the timeline so plan carefully. Included illustrations. This timeline should be the largest part of your project board. Present it creatively.

5000 BC First settlement in China

Team 4 - Ancient Chinese Contributions

Silk Making

The Chinese were the first people in the world to make silk, and for hundreds of years they kept the methods of silk production secret from the rest of the world.

Your team must present the basic steps (6 or 7) in silk production using sequential illustrations with explanations included.

Paper Making

Ts'ai Lun is credited for creating paper as we know it. Your team must write a letter from Ts'ai Lun to the Emperor Han explaining your invention and how it can help his kingdom. Be sure to explain who you are and how you came to invent this.

These inventions are still very important to us today. Your team must give a paragraph explanation of what each of these inventions does and how each ancient invention worked.

In addition, you must draw a picture of the first Chinese seismograph and an early Chinese compass.

Bronze and Early Bronze Casting

The use of Bronze by Shang craftworkers completely changed this civilization. Use classroom art books and the links provided to research this development.

Your team must then write and illustrate a newspaper article detailing this art form and technological breakthrough.

Team 5 - Modern China Today and Tomorrow

Where do they live?

Create a bar graph showing the 7 most populated regions of China and their populations as of 2001.

Beneath this bar graph, explain why you think that these regions are more populated than others. You might have to look at a terrain map to figure this one out. The explaination must be in a clear paragraph.

Chinese Festivals

Using the links provided you will find information about many different festivals celebrated by the Chinese People today. You must research four festivals or holidays.

This research must be in orginial paragraphs of at least six sentences.

You must also include a picture, either original or downloaded, of each festival.

Ethnic Groups in China

Much of the culture of a particular country is based on the different ethnic groups that live there. Using the link provided, create a bar graph that shows the 10 largest ethnic groups by population size.

Be sure to label this carefully, include context information on the ethnic groups, and present it neatly.

Modern Timeline
