Why an Instrument Campaign? Our award-winning teachers and kids strive for excellence in music. The confidence, love of learning, and teamwork inspired by our music program is huge when the instruments are working properly. Right now, our kids use 50 year old pianos that can't be restrung, euphoniums that are fixed with duct tape, broken French horns and saxophones. Recently, a student had to keep trying to play on a disintegrating drum set during a class! When Mr. E sent out 6 horns for repair, only 2 could be returned; the others were unsalvageable. In short, our instruments are worn out and many new instruments are needed as student participation grows. New chairs and chair racks, sheet music, computers, and music technology equipment are also needed for Eckstein to keep pace with the programs at other Seattle Schools.
Won't Band Donations Cover these Costs? Parent donations to the band program make up 73% of its annual program costs. Of those costs, a small fraction of revenue is allocated to instrument upkeep. While enrollment in music at Eckstein has actually increased due to our award-winning teachers and kids, incredibly, District funding has actually dropped to 62¢ per student for music!
Goal: $150,000 over the next 3 years from family, friends, neighbors, the Seattle community, businesses, and corporate matching funds. $10,000.00 start-up will be used from Friends of Band's $16k reserve fund. That's roughly $200 per student, or $67. per student per year.
What Our Music Program Needs: 2 pianos, 4 french horns, 2 bassoons, 2 bass clarinets, 4 tubas, 1 string bass, 2 tenor saxophones, 4 baritone saxophones, 1 jazz drum set, 2 b-flat clarinets, 3 snare drums, 4 piccolos, mallets, 1 bass flute, 1 bass trombone, 2 euphoniums, 1 hard bass case, 4 rolling chair racks, 1 I-Mac, 4 computers, mixing software, microphones, band music books, Marimbas, and much, much more.
