SYLLABUS: Mathematics 6 Honors Andrea Malott Eckstein Middle School
COURSE
OVERVIEW Mathematics
at the sixth grade honors level is a full year course focused on
expanding knowledge, understanding and application of numbers, computation,
estimation, measurement, geometry, statistics, probability, patterns
and algebra. The concepts and procedures of mathematics
are investigated and developed through the defining and solving of
problems, the use of reasoning, the communication of knowledge and
the understanding and the connecting of mathematical ideas within
mathematics to other disciplines and to real life.
The
sixth grade honors course includes the essential learnings
of the seventh grade. Students
are expected to maintain at least a B grade in math to continue in
the honors program.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
1.
How is data
collected, understood and analyzed?
2.
How is number
theory used in solving problems?
3.
How are fractions,
decimals and percents best used in solving problems?
4.
How can algorithms
be developed for calculation of fractions, decimals and percents?
5.
How can strategies
and algorithms be developed for finding measures of two and three
dimensional shapes?
6.
How can properties
of various polygons be useful in creating stable structures and solving
problems?
7.
How can ideas
and problems be expressed with mathematical languages such as models,
tables, graphs, charts, algebraic notation and written reflection?

COURSE CURRICULUM
1.
Connected Mathematics Units
2.
Pre-Algebra Text
COURSE MATERIALS
1.
One inch 3-ring
binder for math notebook
2.
Dividers (5-6)
3.
Pencils/erasers
4.
Notebook paper
5.
Spiral notebook
(70 pages)
The Connected Math Project text booklet will be kept in the math notebook. The math notebook with dividers will be organized in class. Smaller 70 page spiral notebooks are easier to fit in this notebook. Pencils are a critical tool in math class. Students will go through a “check list” in homeroom organizing homework and materials. At home, students will need to be supplied periodically with pencils and paper.
Math Notebook Students will keep all math assignments in the math notebook. Each unit of our CMP curriculum will have a different text booklet which will be kept in this 3-ring bonder. Notebooks will be cleaned out at the end of each unit and papers will be filed in a class portfolio. Parents are welcome to keep these portfolios at home. Order of math notebook sections 1. Math assignment sheet (graded at end of quarter) 2. Work in progress (Vocabulary, Problems of the Day, daily and weekly homework) 3. Graded work 4. Tests/quizzes 5. Skills Review/Daily Math Practice 6. Vocabulary/Notes
Spiral notebook 1. ACE and Reflection questions from the CMP units 2. Math notes 3. Great ideas 4. Questions to investigate
CLASS ROUTINES Homework Routine homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Students will recorded all assignments on Assignment Sheet kept at the front of the Math Notebook. Eckstein Planner,” Agenda”, will be used also for project deadlines, tests, weekly problems, and Extra Credit. Late work No late daily work will be accepted. If absent, students will have a one day extension for each day absent. Tests/Quizzes Weekly homework quiz Unit quiz every 2-3 weeks Unit test at end of each unit
